Turtle Nests on Wassaw (2007-2008)

This page allows you to keep track of the turtle nests on Wassaw Island.
Do you want to know how the nesting season is going? Did you volunteer,
and want to know how it came out for the turtles and the nests/eggs that you
have special knowledge of?

Using high resolution satellite photographs of Wassaw (made available from
Google Maps) and the turtle data. You can view the locations of the turtle
nests on the island and text describing them.

Below are some instructions about using this feature. At the end of the
instructions are the links for mapping the turtle nesting sites.

Instructions

Step 1

It is recommended that the first time you review the instructions.
(Steps 2A through Step 3 shown below).

However you can simply go to the maps.
Skip the instructions, I want to go directly to the maps!

Step 2A

After going to the link you will see the following screen showing Wassaw Island.
The clock will be running. If you just watch you will see the turtle icons appear
on the dates when, and the locations where, the nesting occurred. Over time the
icons will change colors depending on the status of the nests.

The nests will be:
Green: if they are incubating.
Red: if they were destroyed or were known to have failed.
Blue: if turtles have successfully hatched from that nest.

You can control the speed that time passes on the map using the
"Days per second" feature.
You can stop (or restart) the calendar using the buttons.
You can set a date for starting the calendar using that feature.
More controls are shown below.

Step 2B: Information about a nest

You can view more details about a nest by clicking on it
or passing the cursor over it. When you do a text box with
additional information about that nest will appear.

To close this text box click its little x in the upper right
corner of the box.

Step 2C: Image Magnification

You can change the magnification using the updown slider
in the upper left marked "A".

Step 2D: Moving Around Map

You can move around the map simply by using clicking on
the little arrows in the upper left marked "B".

Another way to do this is by simply by clicking and holding
down the mouse cursor on the map and dragging the map.

Step 3A: A Flying Tour

You can fly over the island by clicking the "Play tour button".

This feature will simulate a flight over the island starting in the Southwest
and proceeding up the beach to the Northeast end of the island. The flight
takes about a minute. You cannot control the speed, but you can pause
the flight by clicking "Pause Tour", or click on an icon to review the
information for that nest (which usually pauses the flight).

Comments

There are some things that will be modified in the future. Sometimes when a
information box appears the flow of the program stops. At such times you
will have to hit to the "pause" button followed by the "start" button.

The non-idealities admitted, it is still a wonderful way to see what Wassaw
is like and how the turtles are doing.

When viewing the page showing the island, you can maximize the size of the
window by clicking on the open square at the upper right of the window.

The page showing the island can be closed by clicking the red X at the top
right of the page.
